Jeffry Mitchell, Hello Headstand Elephants Shelf with Small Elephants, 2007

Sculptor, printmaker, painter and conceptual artist Jeffry Mitchell is at Denison, this week through December 11th, as a Vail visiting artist in residence. He is currently working on a series of etchings/prints that will become part of our library's Visiting Artist Print Collection (Jazzman/Periodicals floor).  Jeffry is also on campus doing small presentations on his work and art in general in individual classes, as well as participating in class discussions/critiques and meeting with students, including all Studio Art seniors.

The Art Department's current temporary locations during the construction period of the new state-of-the-art Bryant Center of Art at Cleveland Hall will be located throughout Denison's uphill campus. Drawing and Painting will be taught in the Knapp Amphitheater, non-toxic Printmaking taught in the lower level of the library, Sculpture and Ceramics in SAE House and New Media, Darkroom Photography and Bookmaking in Mulberry house. Faculty offices and studios, Senior studios and additional studios for sculpture and printmaking are housed in Chamberlin Lodge.

The 2008 Farmscape Juried Art Exhibition!
The opening reception will be held Saturday, Dec 6th, 4:30pm, in the Welsh Hills Room of Burton Morgan.

This show celebrates the best photographic work of the students this term, focusing on artistic representations of farmland preservation in Ohio.  Thirty-two images were selected by juror Marcella Hackbardt, art professor at Kenyon College, and all have been matted, framed, and installed by the students.  The show occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of Burton Morgan and will run through January, 2009.

Micaela Vivero’s Intro to Sculpture and Fibers classes currently have work displayed in several areas on campus. The locations are Fellows (1st, 2nd and 3rd floor), Higley (1st floor) and Doane Library (2nd floor, around Jazzman's).  Check it out soon as projects will only be up until Dec 12th!

Carrie Olson's Intro to Ceramics class has installed an exhibition of ceramic pieces in the cases in Burton Morgan.  The work was  made in response to the "From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics" exhibition in the Denison museum. The work will  be up through the end of the semester!

Studio Art Program

Assistant Professor/ New Media & Photography. Tenure Track position starting 2009-2010

To teach undergraduate New Media, Photography and Studio Art foundation courses in rotation in a small liberal arts setting. Five classes per year. MFA in New Media or Photography. In addition to developing curriculum to expand the creative, cross-disciplinary possibilities of digital technology, applicants must be able to teach darkroom photography on a rotational basis for advanced students. The Studio Art Program at Denison University places strong emphasis on integrative art making that relates to all realms of our complex contemporary world. Denison has several interdisciplinary programs that examine global, environmental, ethnic and minority concerns (e.g. Black Studies, Womens Studies, Queer Studies, Environmental Studies, International Studies, East Asian Studies). We strongly encourage artists whose artwork and teaching practice could potentially serve these programs to respond to this position announcement. We are committed to providing our art students with a variety of perspectives, mentors and role models. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Include letter of application, CV, CD or DVD demonstrating professional artistic activity ( i.e. internet art, photography, film, installation, other) and/or website information, examples of student artwork, teaching philosophy, syllabi and three letters of recommendation.
